Common questions and tips from our work with Vaughn customers.
- Why does my diesel smoke when I accelerate?
- The color of the smoke points to the cause. Black smoke usually means too much fuel or not enough air, often from a dirty air filter, a leaking injector or a turbo problem. White smoke can mean unburned fuel on a cold start or coolant getting into the cylinders. Blue smoke usually means the engine is burning oil. A diagnostic check narrows it down before any parts get replaced.
- Why is my diesel hard to start in the cold?
- Diesels rely on heat from compression to light the fuel, so cold weather makes starting harder. Weak glow plugs or a bad glow plug relay, a tired battery, thick oil and fuel that has started to gel are the common causes. If your truck cranks for a long time, starts rough or blows white smoke on cold mornings, have the glow plugs, batteries and fuel system checked.
- What are signs of a failing fuel injector?
- Look for a rough or uneven idle, misfires, a drop in power, worse fuel mileage, a knocking sound or extra smoke. Injectors can stick open, leak or wear out their spray pattern, and contaminated fuel speeds that up. Testing tells which injector is the problem so you are not paying to replace a full set when only one or two have failed.
Tip
Keep your diesel fuel system clean
Most diesel engine trouble starts with fuel. Change fuel filters on schedule, drain the water separator if your truck has one, and buy fuel from busy stations. In winter, use winter-blend fuel or an anti-gel additive before the cold sets in. Clean fuel protects your injectors and pump, which are among the most costly parts of a diesel to repair.
